In a future just a couple of hundred years from now, turning 16 means turning pretty. An operation makes you stunningly gorgeous and starts a life of non-stop parties and excitement. Tally is the last of her friends to turn 16 and as she's waiting to turn, she meets Shay, who raises the question: What if you stayed ugly when you turned 16?
This is something Tally has never even considered, but her friendship with Shay introduces her to an underground society of uglies who question the very nature of turning pretty and whose lives Tally changes forever.
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is the first book in a trilogy, followed by Pretties, Specials and a fourth book, Extras. ******SPOILER ALERT**********
1. When you first started reading about being pretty, did it sound like fun? Did it sound like something you'd want to do at 16?
2. At first, did you hope Tally would get the operation? When did you change your mind? (Or did you?)
3. Would you give up your ability to think independently in exchange for being happy, beautiful, perpetually healthy, and rich?
4. Were you surprised when David's parents revealed that the pretty operation also changes people's brains? Why or why not?
5. When did you figure out that "the Rusties" were us, people living in the 21st century?
6. After finishing Uglies are you planning to read the rest of the series?

1. I wanted to be "pretty" when I first read the first part of the book. Your job is just to party and have fun which doesn't happen in real life.
2. I think Tally should have turned pretty because all her friends were stopping her and it had been her life dream.
3. Sort of. I would like to think but also just to let things go without any stress.
4. I was sort of surprised because I knew something was going on when they had to stay "bubbly" all the time.
5. I figured out the "Rusties" were us when Shay described the Rusty Ruins which was probably an amusement park due to the roller coaster.
6. I have finished "Pretties" by Scott Westerfield and I am working on "Specials" by Scott Westerfield right now.

1. I wanted to be one of those "Pretty" people after getting a little into the book. It sounded like a lot of fun. The parties, friends, popularity and looks was everything I would want but ofcourse that type of stuff only happens in books.
2. I somehow knew Tally wouldn't get the operation because if she didn't their would be no drama in the book. I didn't want her to turn "Pretty" because it seemed as if everyone who was "Pretty" was just a couple of airheads. I knew she was smarter than that.
3. This question has be thinking yes and no. Yes, because of the fact that I can get or be anything that I wanted. And no because I wouldn't have my own mind. But overall, no, because my mind is better than all of those superficial things.
4. No I was not suprised because everything seemed way TOO perfect when you turned "Pretty".
5. I didn't figure it out until the ending of the book. I was sort of caught in the Tally-David love triangle. :]
6. I actually have all of the books in the series which are Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras. I am currently reading Extras at the moment and plan on finishing soon.
